About Us

The Network was set up to encourage research and interest in women’s and gender history both among academics and the wider community in the West of England and South Wales region.  We hold events, including an annual conference,  workshops, film showings and visits to archives throughout the  year in different venues  around the region.

The WESWWHN grew out of and is affiliated to the national Women's History Network.

Our meetings are open to anyone who is interested. You don’t have to be a woman or a member to come along though we will be encouraging you to join.

Currently, membership rates are £10 full and £5 unwaged/student.

If you join you will receive regular postings of events around the region, a biannual newsletter and reduced fees at the summer conference.

Existing research portrays ecofeminism as a globally resonant political ideology but one predominantly focused within the Western hemisphere [1]. To demonstrate that ecofeminism did exist outside of the former capitalist bloc, my paper looks closely at the form that the political ideology took in contemporary East Germany. Women and Community: From Archives to Action

Naomi Oakley, Archivist with Swindon and Wiltshire History Centre, describes the recent 'Rooted in History' project which used garden and nature-related archives to encourage people to garden. Naomi had arranged to present a paper on the subject at our last Annual Conference on Women and the Natural World: Historical Perspectives on Nature Climate and Environmental Change, but was unfortunately prevented.    In 2022 the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre were awarded £10,000 through the National Archives’ testbed fund (a fund to trial ideas) with the aim of using garden and nature related archives to encourage physical activity, mental wellbeing, and to get people gardening. The gardening theme also allowed us to further develop our relationship with Rooted Chippenham, a community market garden founded by two women in 2021 and which is based on the History Centre site. A Blue Plaque for Exeter Writer and Suffragist Mary Willcocks

On Friday 9 June 2923 - a very hot day! – Exeter Civic Society unveiled a blue plaque at 88 Pennsylvania Road, the home for over thirty years of Mary Willcocks, author, lecturer and feminist.  At the Blue Plaque unveiling, 88 Pennsylvania Road, Exeter Mary Willcocks (1869-1952), was a novelist and suffrage activist who spent most of her life in Exeter. She was born on a farm close to Dartmoor, which provided the background for many of her novels, featuring strong women characters, often set in rural Devon. She moved to Exeter in 1907 when her early novels proved successful enough for her to risk abandoning teaching for life as a freelance writer and speaker.
